The U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. Rex Tillerson, is expected to arrive Abuja today for an official meeting slated for tomorrow Tuesday with President Muhammadu Buhari.
Issues to be central to this meeting include counter terrorism efforts and humanitarian issues in Nigeria’s Northeast and the Lake Chad basin. They would also be discussing how to advance peace and security, promote good governance, and spur mutually beneficial trade and investment between both countries.
Mr. Rex Tillerson is expected to hold a press conference alongside the Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday by 11.45 a.m.
The U.S. Secretary of State would also use this opportunity to meet with the U.S. Embassy personnel and participate in events related to U.S. government-supported activities.
Mr. Tillerson’s visit to Nigeria happens to be part of his weeklong tour in Africa.
He earlier visited the Horn of Africa after he had announced a new $533 million aid package for Africa out of which $128 million was earmarked for Nigeria and countries of the Lake Chad region.
However, present information review that Mr. Tillerson will likely not make it to Nigeria in order to enable him return to Washington early Tuesday.
Speculations continue to exist that the meeting when finally held would yield better benefits for Nigeria considering Mr. Trump’s take on Nigeria and her citizens enthusiasm to migrate into the U.S.A.
