Following recent claims by the Independent National Electoral Commission that the Commission registered underage voters due to security threats on its staff one will begin to wonder what the role of INEC is in conducting elections for Nigeria.
As a result of this, the leadership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its lack of confidence in the capacity INEC chairman to conduct free, fair and credible elections in 2019.
The party said that it was sad that the commission claimed that it registered underage voters in some states like Kano and Katsina because of threats to the lives of its officials.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, who spoke at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, also accused the commission of embarking on illegal acts.
Mr. Kola who sighted the issues of INEC registering and issuing permanent voter cards to millions of underage persons, particularly in Kano and Katsina states respectively requested that the INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu resign.
It was a shocker for the nation last Wednesday when the Director of Publicity and Voter Education of INEC, Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, announced that the Commission had registered underage voters because its agents were threatened by members of the communities in the concerned states.
At this point, one may not be wrong to predict that the Nation may as well be put a siege. If the Nations electoral process vis-à-vis its leadership could be manipulated in broad day light then the entire Country may as well be sieged.
